Underlying Pigment by Level: Toner Selection Chart
Lifting exposes warmth in a fixed order: red at level 5, red-orange at 6, orange at 7, orange-yellow at 8, yellow at 9, pale yellow at 10. You neutralize with the tone opposite it on the wheel — green for red, blue for orange, violet for yellow. Everything else is dosage, developer and timing.
What is underlying pigment?
Natural hair colour is a mix of eumelanin (brown-black) and pheomelanin (red-yellow). Lightening destroys them at different rates: the brown-black pigment breaks down faster than the red-yellow. What is left behind at any given point is the underlying pigment, and it is exposed in a fixed, predictable sequence.
This is why lifting always looks warm on the way up. You are not adding warmth — you are removing everything that was covering it. Toning is the act of cancelling what remains, which means you have to know what remains before you can choose the toner.
Underlying pigment and neutralizer by level
Read the level the hair has actually lifted to, dry, then read across. The neutralizing tone is the one opposite on the colour wheel.

Levels are a continuum, not steps
Hair does not lift from 7 to 8 in a jump. Most heads sit between two rows of this table, and most heads sit on more than one row at once — which is what the next section is about.
How do you tone hair that lifted unevenly?
Almost all of it lifts unevenly. Root heat drives the scalp area further, previously coloured mid-lengths resist, and porous ends grab whatever you put on them. A single formula across all three is a guess that happens to work sometimes.
Zonal toning, and when it is worth the time
- Two zones or more than one level apart: mix two formulas. A level 9 root and a level 7.5 mid-length need different neutralizers — violet and blue respectively — and one compromise formula neutralizes neither properly.
- Within half a level: one formula, applied to the most-lifted zone last so it has the least exposure.
- Porous ends: apply last regardless of level, and expect them to reach the target faster than the timer says.
Read it dry, and read it wet once
Wet hair reads roughly one level darker and noticeably cooler than it will dry. Judging lift on wet hair is the single most common reason a toner is chosen for the wrong row of the table. Rinse, rough-dry the section you are judging, then decide.
Why do ash toners go gray or green?
Over-neutralization. Ash and matte tones deposit real blue and green pigment; if the warmth you were cancelling is not there in the quantity you assumed, that pigment has nothing to react against and simply stays visible as itself.
- Wrong row of the table. Blue-based ash on level 9 yellow leaves a green cast, because blue cancels orange, not yellow. Level 9 wants violet.
- Porosity. Compromised hair absorbs disproportionately and holds cool pigment hardest. Same formula, same timing, much more deposit.
- Repeat toning. Cool pigment accumulates over successive services even when each one was individually correct.
The level 6 boundary
Somewhere between levels 6 and 8 the correct neutralizer changes from blue to violet, because the underlying pigment crosses from orange to yellow. Getting this boundary wrong in either direction is what produces both the muddy green result and the stubbornly brassy one.
10 vol or 20 vol for toning?
10 vol (3%) for deposit-only toning, which is most toning. It develops the toner without meaningfully lifting, so the level you assessed is the level you tone.
20 vol (6%) only when you need roughly half a level of lift alongside the tone — for example, a level 8.5 that needs to read 9 and be neutralized in one step. The trade-off is real: 20 vol exposes a little more underlying warmth while it works, so the toner is simultaneously cancelling more than you measured.
Acidic demi systems are a separate case: they ship their own low-peroxide processing solution at a fixed ratio, and substituting a standard cream developer at the same volume changes both the pH and the deposit. Ratios and developers by product line.
My toner failed — which variable was wrong?
Four variables can be wrong, and each one fails with a different signature. Work through them in this order.
- Result is still warm, evenly. Under-neutralized. You read the level too light — the hair had more orange than you allowed for. Re-tone one row lower on the table, not longer.
- Result is green or grey-cast. Over-neutralized, or the wrong direction entirely. Blue applied to yellow. Wait, let it soften, and correct with a warm gloss rather than more ash.
- Result is patchy along the strand. Not the toner — the lift was uneven and you toned it as one zone. Fix by zonal re-toning, not by a different formula.
- Result was right, then faded in a week. Under- processed, or porosity. Acidic demis on very porous hair deposit quickly and release quickly. Shorter interval refresh, or a filler-first approach.
The order matters: people almost always reach for a different toner when the actual failure was reading the level wet, or toning two zones as one.
